Research Study

• To define and analyze cross-border and in-country livestock and livestock-products market systems in Bangladesh" (15 April, 2013- 7 November, 2013)
Client: Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations

RTM International conducted a cross border study on Livestock value chain. The overall goal of the project was to identify high-risk areas for introduction of TADs via cross-border routes by mapping livestock market chains and livestock trade volumes within Bangladesh and across its borders with India and Myanmar. The objective of this study was to delineate and map existing livestock value chains and estimation of the volume of livestock trade through these chains, spatial mapping of the different actors (e.g. markets, producers etc.) of the value chain, their contact structure and livestock density throughout the value chain, defining and spatial mapping of the major livestock trading routes, modeling and mapping of the high risk areas in the value chain based on the value chain determinants and network structure. It was conducted in eight epidemiological units like Zokigonj, Burungamari, Burimari, Chagolnya, Teknaf, Sonamosjid, Benapole & Hili under the districts of Sylhet, Kurigram, Lalmonirhat, Feni, Cox’sBazar, Chapainowabgonj, Jessore & Dinajpur. Data were collected from 430 different numbers of actors by conducting Key Informant Interviews among Traders (253), Cattle & Buffalo farmer (113), Sheep & Goat farmer (50) & Pig farmer (14) and identified cross border landing station (Legal & Illegal) through the GPS reader.
